Managing menus

The Menus screen (menu Administration › Appearance and languages › Menus) sets up the Portail ZAPP navigation menu: its entries, their order, their icon, their labels in each language and the groups that see them. It is reserved for Administrators.

The menu list

Each menu has a Name, a Type and a creation date. Row buttons: Edit, Assignments, Export and Delete (after confirmation).

+ New menu asks for a Name and a Type: Main, Contextual or Sidebar. The Portail ZAPP navigation shows a menu of type Main: the one assigned to the person or to one of their groups (see "Assignments"), otherwise the default main menu, marked with the Default badge in the list. The default menu is the Main menu; if it does not exist or is not of type Main, it is the oldest menu of type Main. Any other menu of type Main is therefore only shown to the people it is assigned to.

The menu shipped with Portail ZAPP is called Main. Updates add the entries of new features to it by finding it under that name: do not rename it.

Editing a menu

Edit opens the menu:

  • Properties: its Name and Type, then Save;
  • Items: its entries, shown as a tree.

Adding an item

The Add item form asks for:

  • the Label, shown when no translation matches the reader's language;
  • the page path (for example /tickets); left empty, the item acts as a folder for other items;
  • the icon (for example bi-house): the button next to the field opens an icon picker with search;
  • the parent (No parent for a top-level entry);
  • the order (a number: smallest first).

Label, path, icon and parent cannot be changed afterwards: to change them, delete the item and create it again. The displayed label, however, can be corrected through the translations.

Arranging items

Drag an item by its ⠿ handle: the new order is saved at once (Saved appears). Drag and drop changes the order, not the parent.

In the navigation, top-level entries follow the chosen order. Inside a folder, sub-folders come before links, then order and label decide.

Who sees an item

Open an item to set its Permissions section:

  • Allowed groups: tick the groups concerned. No group ticked: the item is visible to everyone;
  • Visibility mode: Any group (belonging to one of them is enough) or All groups (one must belong to all of them).

This visibility only affects how the menu is displayed, not permissions: hiding an entry does not forbid the page, which stays protected by its own permissions (see "Setting permissions"). Conversely, some entries show up for a person who has the rights to the page even if their groups hide it. Entries of a module not included in the license are hidden. A change in a person's groups reaches their menu within a few minutes.

Translating an item

The Translations section lists the item's labels and tooltips by language. Add / update translation: choose the Lang (among the active languages), type the Label and, if needed, the Tooltip, then Save; an existing translation for that language is replaced. Delete removes a translation.

Everyone sees the label in their language, failing that the one in the instance's default language, failing that the base label.

Deleting an item

Delete item (after confirmation) removes the item and its translations. An item that contains sub-items cannot be deleted: the message "This item has sub-items: move or delete them first." is shown and nothing is deleted. Delete its sub-items first.

Export and import

  • Export downloads the menu as a JSON file: entries, order, icons, translations and allowed groups (identified by their code).
  • Import loads such a file. If a menu with the same name exists, all its entries are replaced by those of the file; otherwise the menu is created. The result states whether the menu was created or updated, and the number of items imported.

A group from the file that does not exist on the instance is listed under Groups unknown on this instance. An entry is never opened to everyone because of a missing group: if none of its groups exist (or one is missing in All groups mode), it is restricted to administrators and listed under Entries restricted to administrators. Create the missing groups before importing, or review the visibility of the entries concerned afterwards. Without an administrators group on the instance, the import is refused and nothing is changed.

Assignments

Assignments links the menu to an account or a group, with a Priority (from 0 to 100, 50 by default): choose the Target type (Group or User), then the Target — the group from the list, or the account by searching its name or email address (at least two characters) — and Add. The assignment list shows the target's name; a target deleted since then shows as Not found.

Assignments drive the Portail ZAPP navigation as well as applications that read the menu through the API:

  1. the menu of type Main assigned to the person themselves, whatever its priority;
  2. otherwise, the one assigned to one of their groups, highest priority first (with equal priority, the menu name decides);
  3. otherwise, the default main menu.

Only menus of type Main replace the navigation: assigning a Contextual or Sidebar menu does not change it (the screen says so). Within the chosen menu, each entry is still subject to its group visibility.
